“A Bag of Tricks: Crafting Your Teaching Philosophy”
SPP Doctoral Student Workshop
During job searches, employers often look for evidence of public speaking, teaching, and training experience. A teaching philosophy is a critical part of an application. It is also a blueprint for enhancing your classroom skills. Professor Katrin Anacker and Shannon Williams Hettler, Assistant Director of PhD Student Services, are teaming up to lead this session. Both are experienced classroom instructors with backgrounds in educational theory and practice.

Please join us for two useful presentations in one convenient workshop.
University Dissertation and Thesis Services
Anyone aiming to write a dissertation will need to be familiar with layout requirements and completion steps.
Sally Evans from University Dissertation and Thesis Services (UDTS) will provide an overview of the format review and library submission processes.
DoIT – Advanced Word Skills
While most students are familiar with the basics of MS Word, many do not know how to take advantage of some of Word’s most convenient features. Templates, headings, tables of contents, and section formatting are a few of the shortcuts that can help streamline the process of writing research papers and, ultimately, a dissertation.
Abel Roasa from the Department of Instructional Technology (DoIT) will guide participants through a hands-on tour of Word’s time-saving tools.
For more information or to RSVP, please contact Shannon Williams Hettler (703) 993-4143 or shettler@gmu.

Elevator Speeches and Soundbites – Verbal Communication Strategies for Doctoral Students
3:00pm – 4:20pm
Arlington Campus, Founders Hall, Student Services Suite, Room 556
Do you want practice “getting to the point?” Scholars attend countless conferences and occasionally receive interview requests from the media. You may only have the briefest opportunity to say something clear and memorable. Handled well, those fleeting conversations can build your professional network and your reputation. This workshop will give you pointers on teasing out the key elements of your research and preparing yourself for the unexpected.
Andy Brown, SPP Director of Marketing and Communications, teams up with Professor Katrin Anacker to lead this workshop.
